Why should
I vote?
What do you expect of a Councillor?.
Councillors on St.Helena fulfil a number of roles: (click on the entries to jump directly)
When you vote for a Member of Legislative Council, you are helping to select a pool of possible representatives that will effectively run the country. This is no exaggeration. The five Executive Council Members are important pieces of the Administration jigsaw, headed by the Governor, advised by the Governor's Group, and implemented by the Civil Service (i.e. the Heads of Departments).
Select a weak set of LegCo members and that is all there will be to choose from for Executive Council seats. It would be a mistake to choose an inappropriate candidate, and a bigger mistake to choose none - because then somebody else will choose for you.
Ambassador for St.HelenaThere will be times when SHG decide that they need to be represented, either at a local function when some important dignitary arrives for a visit (imagine the Queen arriving on the next RMS!), or at off-shore meetings and conferences with politicians from other countries. Not everybody is up to this challenge, and not all elected Members are either. When you choose a candidate at the election, just keep in mind that they could be making a speech about you and your country to some powerful people in foreign countries!
